Food Photography 101

It is no secret that I am a food lover (hey, no one hates food). I am recently inspired by some amazing pros with their amazing food photography. So, I decided to teach myself some basics of food photography 101.

After browsing through the Internet and watching a dozen of YouTube videos, here are some keys takeaway to help anyone start making some great food photographs.
  1. Lighting (a lot of light) - the food needs to be well lit, so it looks fresh and appetizing.
  2. White balance - warm and neutral tone is usually preferred, and all colors should look true to their origin.
  3. Texture - selectively retain and enhance the food texture will help increase the authenticity of the dish.
  4. Eliminate distraction - keep background clean and free of distraction to help lead viewer's eyes to the main focus - the food.
  5. Composition - although food should be the main focus, it is also important to provide a good amount of surrounding space to help creating a mood for the photograph. Don't get too close to the food and choose the right angle to show interesting features of the dish.
Food photography is really fun and affordable. It requires very little investment, and you may have most of the things you might need from you kitchen. Try it for yourself!
